Saliva has emerged as a promising noninvasive medium for health monitoring and disease detection. This review synthesizes current research on salivary diagnostics with a focus on biomarkers, metabolomics, and the oral microbiome. Studies have indicated that inflammatory biomarkers and metabolites in saliva can reflect certain conditions including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and inflammatory diseases. Advances in the technology and techniques have significantly improved the ability to identify disease-related biomarkers in saliva supporting its growth as a reliable diagnostic tool.
