| dc.description | Keynote speech given by Jude Maul, PhD in the Gracie Theater for the 2026 Research and Scholarship Day. (59:19 min.) Brief Biography: Dr. Jude Maul serves as a Research Ecologist with the United States Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS), where he works in the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory. He began his academic journey with a Master of Science in Plant Biochemistry from the University of Kentucky and went on to earn his Ph.D. in Horticulture and Biogeochemistry from Cornell University in 2008. Dr. Maul’s research centers on molecular ecology at the critical intersection of plants, soil, and water. His work explores how these systems interact to influence plant health, nutrient uptake, and overall agricultural productivity. By applying advanced molecular and metagenomic techniques, he investigates the roles of both beneficial and harmful microorganisms associated with soil and plants, with the goal of understanding how these microbial communities affect crop resilience and performance. Through this research, Dr. Maul contributes to the development of practical strategies that help farmers manage plant diseases more effectively and reduce crop losses, ultimately supporting more sustainable and efficient agricultural systems. In addition to his research, he plays a key leadership role as head of the Soils Working Group within the USDA Long-Term Agroecosystem Research Network. In this capacity, he is helping to build a national soil data repository designed to enhance large-scale soil health research and improve consistency in data collection across regions. Dr. Maul collaborates extensively with scientists and stakeholders across the country, advancing understanding of how environmental conditions and land management practices influence soil systems over time. His work has had a significant impact in the fields of soil science and agroecosystem research, as reflected by more than 5,800 citations and an h-index of 34. | |
