This review synthesizes current research on salivary diagnostics with a focus on biomarkers, metabolomics, and the oral microbiome. Studies have indicated that inflammatory biomarkers and metabolites in saliva can reflect certain conditions including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and inflammatory diseases.
